Holy Fang Studios
A state of the art analog/digital residential recording facility situated on a rescue animal sanctuary with a seasonal festival stage in Hudson Valley, NY. Founded by Oliver Ignatius and formerly operating as Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen in Brooklyn, Holy Fang has been in the business of helping artists realize their musical dreams since 2010. In addition, our second location Holy Fang North is a multimedia opera house and arts center located in an 150 year old church in southern Vermont. With a strong focus on nurturing community among artists, and years of great records under our belts, it is our pleasure to collaborate uniquely with every individual artist. Can I bring another engineer/producer/musician/friend?
We believe the more the merrier at Holy Fang! We just ask that you communicate who will be coming in advance, so we can prepare accordingly.
Can you live track multiple musicians at Holy Fang?
Live-tracking is one of our specialties, and one of our favorite things to do. In a word, yes!
Are there any additional costs or hidden fees?
NO. What you are promised is what you get.
What is your deposit/cancellation policy?
When booking a project, it is Holy Fang’s policy to request a nonrefundable 50% deposit to confirm the booking. While the deposit is not refundable, booked dates can be moved with no penalty if communication is made at least 7 days in advance.
Do you offer mixing and mastering services?
Mixing is one of our specialties at Holy Fang, and we love to mix all kinds of projects, whether or not we recorded them. Mastering is a specialty scientific craft to which many people dedicate their entire lives, and we recommend dedicated mastering engineers to artists who can afford them. For those on a tighter budget, we are more than capable of turning out great sounding masters.
How many people can the studio accommodate?
The studio has five bedrooms, and can comfortably sleep between 5 and 10 people. The recording space can fit anything from power duos to larger chamber ensembles.
How far in advance do I need to book the studio?
Usually we are booked a month or two in advance, although dates do open up. Never be shy about reaching out as we always do our best to accommodate everyone, but as a general rule, the earlier the better!
Can I bring my own equipment to your studio? Can I use yours?
Yes to both! We always encourage artists to bring the instruments they are most comfortable playing, as that often leads to a more comfortable performance. But our extensive backline of world-class instruments is always available for use on sessions.
FAQs
What is the rate for recording time?
At Holy Fang, we believe that exquisite recording should be affordable to talented artists from all walks of life. With that in mind, we work on a sliding scale, and make it a point not to turn any budget away. Please get in touch with us about your project, and we will work on a tailor-made plan that works for you!
How long does it take to record an album or EP?
This question is practically impossible to answer - some artists record an entire album live in the studio in one day, where other artists spend years tinkering with one song. And then there’s the entire range in between. This is part of why we care so much about building individualistic, artist friendly session plans, and all of this is extensively communicated over in our pre-production conversations.
Do you work on all different kinds of music?
We love all styles of music at Holy Fang, as long as the work is a sincere expression of the individuality of the artist. It is our greatest pleasure to help you hone and develop your style, and your own unique artistic voice.
Can we record on your tape reels?
Yes, Holy Fang always has a few “beater” 2” tape reels around that get recorded over and over, and you’re welcome to make use of them. Of course, if your goal is perfect fidelity and preservation of your tapes, we recommend buying and using your own!
